Streama Dominates Australian Oaks Odds 2012

This year’s edition of the 2012 Australian Oaks runs on Saturday and there is only one horse the punters want in the classic, Streama.

Streama

Streama dominates the 2012 Australian Oaks for Royal Randwick on Saturday

Six and a half length winner of the Flight Stakes last October at Royal Randwick, Guy Walter’s smart Stratum filly Streama returns to the track for the first time since seeking another Group 1 title in the $550,000 Patinack Farm Australian Oaks (2400m).

She faces just seven rivals, her imposing form and the rain-affected track scaring away all but the bravest or sillies, and two of those are fellow Walter-trained stablemates doing some field filling.

Connections of four-time Group 1 winner Mosheen may be feeling slightly silly for not having taken her into this race, because there really isn’t much to beat.

Streama comes off a close second to Mosheen in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) from April 7, that form alone enough to explain her $1.60 price in the Australian Oaks odds at bookmaker.com.au.

In the Vinery Streama was a fast-finishing, fast-approaching runner-up and with while she goes to the 2400-metres for the first time in the Oaks her last run suggests she will do well over the distance.

There are three other runners currently at single-figure odds in the Australian Oaks betting markets at bookmaker.com.au, the next shortest priced of which is Full Of Spirit at $4.80.

The Roger James-trained Flying Spur filly from NZ caught the eye and earned an Oaks late entry when she was successful in her Australian debut last Saturday when James McDonald rode her to a one length win over Plumm in the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m).

McDonald retains the ride for Saturday, but how Full Spirit handles the wet will be key to whether she can bring any sort of notable competition to the favourite.

“Dead or slow would be a lot better for her,” James admitted.

“She is unknown at the distance but the way she finished off her race in the Adrian Knox Stakes suggests it should be no problem.”

Peter Moody’s in-form O’Reilly filly Thy last seen crossing a good fourth in the Vinery, and the Kerry Parker-trained Aliyana Tilde who did one better than Thy running third in the Vinery follow on $9.

The progressive David Hayes-trained Fastnet Rock filly Rock Robster, last seen coming in second over the Oaks distant at Mornington a fortnight ago, is the only other one under $40 in the betting, Craig Williams’ mount paying $34.

Walter’s other reps are then Adrian Knox Stakes fourth placegetter Lightens and Danzero filly Colourist paying $41 and $61 respectively, and if they handle the wet like he predicts and trail their star stablemate they could add good value to the winning Australia Oaks trifecta.

At the tail end of the Australian Oaks markets is then the Clarry Conners-trained daughter of Choisir Suzanne at $81 who would have to improve around eight lengths to challenge.

Now is the time to jump on $1.60 for Streama to win the Australian Oaks as money is only going to come in for her and shorten her quote into unbackable territory.
